Margaret decided while still at school she wanted to do nursing. She wrote to two hospitals, Guy’s and St. George’s. Found Guy’s very unfriendly and rather overpowering so she went to St. George’s. This was in 1939
Margaret started nursing about eight months before the war started some of the patients were dispersed from the hospital and Hyde Park Corner to an old workhouse in Slough. Later on, temporary Nissan huts were put up as wards. Margaret went to Slough for two or three periods. At Slough Margaret obtained some good experience. It was an industrial area and some factories were bombed, resulting in a number of burns cases and skin grafting was in its infancy.
Margaret finished her training in 1943 and joined the navy. In 1946, after being demobbed from the navy Margaret returned to St. George’s. While she was working as a Sister at St. George’s, she applied to do a midwifery course. Three months were spent at the St. George’s maternity unit, which had moved to the top floor of Hyde Park Corner, and three months at York Road.
