Daphne was born in December 1938. After leaving school, she decided on nursing as a career and went to train at St. George’s in September 1957. For her State practical she had to go to Lewisham Hospital where she had to set trolleys for various procedures under the scrutiny of a veritable battle-axe of an examiner. She was awarded the gold medal for her year ‘which came as quite a bombshell!’

Daphne became a Sister on Caroline ward, which was male surgery and cardiac pacemakers at Tooting and in 1969 opened the first Intensive Care Unit at St. George’s. She then entered nursing administration and became involved in a considerable amount of committee work. She was a service representative on the examination board at St. George’s and on the enrolled nurse career advice working party when they were looking at conversion courses for enrolled nurses, which was ongoing until she retired.
