Gwen was born November 1929. She started at St. Georges in June 1950. She did PTS in Earls Court Square

While she was at Hyde Park Corner, King George VI died. It was an opportunity, with the patients, to see the funeral procession coming past St. George’s. Gwen went to the Atkinson Morley Hospital at the end of the first year. At the time they were doing much pioneering surgery. She also worked in the special room on Hawkins ward which was a precursor to Intensive Care.

St. George’s took over the Tooting Hospital in her second year. Gwen worked on the two TB wards.

Gwen met her future husband while in her fourth year, working as a staff nurse on theatre.

Then she worked for six months doing district nursing until her husband’s job got moved to Bath. She was pregnant and gave up nursing for the time being to become a mother. 14 years later, when she had three children, there was a bad influenza epidemic. They were living in Plymouth and she went back as a volunteer nurse, for about a fortnight until the worst of the epidemic was over. [NV032]
