Jo was born in October 1930 in Surrey. Her first thoughts about becoming a nurse came during the second world war, when visiting her sister who had been seriously injured when her house was bombed, and then helping her father, who was an auxiliary firefighter, to learn first aid.
She joined the nursing school at St George’s in January 1956. At the age of 25 she was one of the oldest in the set. She completed her first 3 years successfully and went to Atkinson Morley for her fourth year as a staff nurse on Kent Ward. She enjoyed the work at AMH – the patients required a high level of nursing. She also found AMH a stimulating and exciting place to work because it was at the forefront of neurosurgery.
Jo nursed in South Africa and Australia before finally settling in New Zealand. She returned to England and became a health visitor. After a while she obtained nurse tutor qualifications and taught community nursing in two hospitals in south west London.
